Watch Calif. Deputies Pull Colleague's Cruiser Stuck in Floodwaters
Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies helped a stranded colleague after his cruiser became stuck in floodwaters from Hurricane Hilary on Monday.
The rescue happened in the Whittier Narrows recreation area in South El Monte, and a KCAL-TV news helicopter was able to capture footage of it. In the video, a deputy's SUV cruiser was unable to continue along a flooded roadway, with water reaching past the unit's tires.
Deputies on a dry stretch of road ahead of the stuck cruiser began working to find a solution as the stranded deputy hung out the driver's side window of his unit. With a towline from her cruiser in hand, a deputy then wades through the floodwaters and attaches the rope to the front of the SUV.
Finally, the deputies were able to pull the stranded cruiser out of the floodwaters and onto the dry roadway. No one was injured in the incident.
Southern California residents and officials spent Monday assessing the damage caused by Hurricane Hilary over the weekend. Record-setting rainfall from the first tropical storm to hit the area in nearly 85 years knocked out power and caused massive flooding throughout the region.
In San Bernardino County, a massive mudslide had firefighters fleeing from their station as rocks, tree trunks and other debris cut off access to the building, according to KTLA-TV. No one was injured in the incident.
